In their first recording together, guitarist-composer Kim Perlak and percussionist Francisco Mela explore, create, and realize “spaces.” These spaces inspire composition: the spaces in the music, and the spaces they make for each other. In three large works, Lake, Stream, and Riverwalk, Kim Perlak conveys the vibrancy of natural landscapes in a highly personal and modern compositional language for the classical guitar. These spaces are brought to life in a duo performance through Francisco Mela’s unique voice in spontaneous composition at the drumset. The colors, textures, rhythms, melodies, harmonies, and silences – interpreted and freely combined – evoke the surprising realities of the natural world.
“This [project] was pretty extraordinary…Kara made it come to life in a way that worked. She kept pushing the envelope in the right direction, it was unbelievable.” -Joan Tower
