Guitarist/Composer Kim Perlak and Percussionist Francisco Mela explore and create Space
Perlak/Mela Duo celebrate the release of their debut, "Spaces."
Stephen Mattingly, solo guitar recital, premiering Cochran’s Three Inward Glances, commissioned in memory of Bruce Holzman, 33rd Iserlohn International Guitar Festival, Oberste Stadtkirche, Germany.
In their first recording together, guitarist-composer Kim Perlak and percussionist Francisco Mela explore, create and realize “spaces”. These are the spaces that inspire composition, the spaces in the music, and the spaces they make for each other. In three large works, Lake, Stream, and Riverwalk, Kim Perlak conveys the vibrance of natural landscapes in a personal modern compositional language for the classical guitar. These spaces are brought to life in duo performance through Mela’s unique voice in spontaneous composition at the drumset, and their collaboration in the moment to create, change, and build form. The tone colors, textures, rhythms, melodies, harmonies, and silences – interpreted and freely combined – evoke the grounding and surprising realities of the natural world, their collaboration, and of the music itself.
